Dear Families, Friends and Students,
This morning we waved off our grade 5/6 students for their exciting few days at Camp Clayton. We know they will have a memorable time away and come home on Friday with many stories to tell about their group activities, cabin life and fun on the giant swing! We wish everyone lots of learning and fun during the next few days. Many, many thanks to teachers and staff who are accompanying students for the additional work load as well as organisation involved for nights away from their own families. We certainly appreciate this goes above and beyond! Thank you!
Preliminary Progress Reports
On Friday last week P–6 students took home their Term 1 PPR. This report gives an indication of the way your child has settled into their 2025 class group as a learner and class member. We know that intellectual ability is just one element contributing to learning success. Please talk with your child’s teacher if you have questions or comments and take the time to celebrate with your child to reinforce the qualities where they are doing well and set personal goals for where they need to focus next.
Slide Project Update
Workers continue with the installation of the slide in our playground, with many of us checking on the progress every day. The playground features which are part of the project are looking amazing and we can’t wait for our turn to play in the new space. We are hopeful everything will be complete when students return after the holiday break.
Swings Playground
Once our current project is complete, our full attention will turn to the swings playground which is next for development following a priority list set using student feedback. We have competed plans for the swings playground, which also features a sandpit and water play area as well as some other elements. Playground development costs are significant as many regulations and standards apply and there are limited contractors with the qualifications required. I am hopeful we can make a start on the new area this year as the addition of swings is eagerly awaited!
Easter Raffle
Many thanks to families for their support of this fundraiser, with all money raised going towards the swings playground. We raised $2333 following just a few weeks of furious ticket sales. Congratulations to our winners from each class and to families who have been awarded with the top ticket seller prizes. A list of winners is published later in this addition. Many, many thanks to everyone involved in this fundraiser. We deeply appreciate your efforts, donations and contributions. Prizes are available from the office from this afternoon, following the prize draw which was held at Line Up today.
New Gate
During the holiday break we expect a new gate will be installed at the main entry from the staff carpark. As Glen Dhu is surrounded by busy roads, it’s important that our playground is secure and fencing and entrances help to keep students safe. As usual, all gates will be locked during school hours, with entry after 9am and before 2:45 through the main entry only.
Basketball Championships
During the past few weekends some students in grades 3/4 and 5/6 have participated in the Tasmanian Primary Basketball Championships. This is not a school event, but co-ordinated by several keen parents and members of staff. We are most thankful to parents who have stepped up as coaches and/or managers to allow teams to practice and participate in the weekend carnivals. It was exciting to see teams taste a little success during several days’ of play and to see the grit, perseverance and resilience of our students. Traditional excellent sporting attitudes we have come to expect of our students were also on display. Congratulations to students and parents involved for representing yourselves and Glen Dhu so well!
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day falls during the holiday break, but students who want to walk with our school group in the ANZAC Parade should return the permission form to the office by Friday. Thank you to Rhiannon Morrison and Grace Evorall who will accompany our students as they represent our school in this important civic event. We will commemorate ANZAC Day with a service led by student leaders on Monday 28 April.
Uniform
Students look amazing as they wear full uniform to show their respect and responsibility in the way they arrive at school. Black and/or navy shoes and socks complete our uniform and we thank all families who have ensured that any new shoes purchased fit with our uniform code. As the cooler weather arrives, we remind students to bring a navy jacket or jumper to ensure they are comfortable and ready for play.
Welcomes and Farewells
Farewell to Lucy and Alfie as their family moves to Legana. We also farewell Grace as she moves to another Launceston school and Seyed H who has moved interstate. Best wishes for success and happiness at your new schools.

This year our Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 9 May for Prep – 6.
We are currently seeking donations for the stall. In particular chocolates, lollies and cans of soft drink.
All donations can be left at the office in the tub provided or alternatively be given to your child to deliver to their class teacher.
If anyone can help with making some yummy baked goodies or sweets for our stall that would be greatly appreciated. These must be individually wrapped, have ingredients listed and can be brought to the library on the morning of the stall.
Plants are always popular, please let the office know if you are able to help with donating these closer to the stall date.
More stall information will be provided at a later date but if you have any further queries or can help out in any way please let us know.

Grade 1/2B and 1/2C had a fantastic afternoon learning to using the laptops and learning how to use Office 360. For the last 10 minutes of the day we were able to explore the paint application while turning the computer into a tablet. It was a great afternoon team teaching and exploring the STEM world.

In 1/2B, students have been creating Easter sun catchers. We made them by ripping up tissue paper and gluing it between two pieces of plastic. We had an outline to help us with our creations, and then we traced and cut them out. They look amazing when the sun shines through the window.

Schools Basketball Tournaments
Sixteen games, some wins, some loses and loads of smiles. School's basketball weekends were held over the last two weekends.
A special thank you to Sam Williams, Leigh Thompson, Vanessa Vocke and Mel Reid - for preparing, coaching and encouraging our teams over the weekend - it wouldn't happen without you.
All 4 teams did a great job and represented Glen Dhu school with pride.

Last day of Canteen Enterprise for Term 1 will be Thursday 10 April. Closed on Friday.
Supporting Your Child's Online Learning at Home
Online learning has become an essential part of education, and families play a crucial role in supporting their child’s digital learning experience. By developing digital skills, creating a safe learning environment, and spending time online together, parents can help their children thrive academically and safely navigate the digital world.
Develop Your Digital Skills
Understanding the technology your child uses can help you guide and support them effectively. Take the time to explore educational platforms, learn about internet safety, and stay updated on the latest digital tools. There are many free online courses and resources available to help parents develop their digital literacy skills.
Creating a Safe and Engaging Online Environment
Ensuring a secure and structured digital space for learning is key. Here are some tips:
- Set up parental controls on devices and applications to filter age-appropriate content.
- Encourage open discussions about online safety, including responsible social media use and recognizing potential online risks.
- Establish screen time guidelines to balance online learning with offline activities.
Opportunities to Play, Explore, and Learn
Children learn best when they have the chance to explore concepts in a fun and interactive way. You can support their learning by:
- Engaging in educational games that reinforce what they learn in school.
- Watching educational videos together to enhance understanding of various subjects.
- Encouraging creativity through digital storytelling, coding activities, and online art projects.
Over the coming weeks there will be further information placed in our school newsletter with tools and tricks to support your child’s online learning at home. More information can be found at: Digital skills for families - Department for Education, Children and Young People

Subway Lunches are on Wednesdays.
Lunches can be ordered multiple weeks in advance. Don't forget to update your child's profile to their 2025 class (they are listed as Kinder A etc. rather than their teacher's name this year). Please email contact@subsforyou.com for more information.
We will be communicating with parents via email throughout the year and want to keep our email contact list as accurate as possible. Please notify the office if your email changes, in person by phone: 6344 1349 or email: glen.dhu.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
We are an allergy aware school and need your support as we have a number of students with severe allergies to nuts as well as some other common allergens. Students are asked not to bring any food items that contain nuts or traces of nuts. If you are not sure, please keep this as a home food rather than a school lunch box item. For example, peanut butter, nutella and many muesli bars contain nuts and CANNOT be brought to school! Thank you for your support in helping to keep everyone safe.
We are always looking for volunteers for our Breakfast Club every morning from 8:30-9.00 am. If you would like to help just let the school office know. Helpers can volunteer for a day, a week or day a fortnight. We would love to hear from you.
Safe Guarding Children & Young People
Volunteering at Glen Dhu Primary School in 2025
We love having families involved in their children’s education at Glen Dhu Primary School.
Did you know if you want to volunteer at school as parent help, on an excursion or in Breakfast or Reading Club you need to complete Mandatory Safeguarding Training? This is to help keep all our children safe and so that you know what to do if you see or hear something that concerns you.
The training is easy! Watch the 15 minute video at the link below, save a copy of your certificate to show at the school office and you are ready to go!
Compulsory Safeguarding Training for Workers - Department for Education, Children and Young People
Training must be completed every 12 months.
Thank you for helping to keep out children safe!
