Dear Families, Friends and Students,
Welcome to Term 2. We are very pleased to see students return ready for learning after the holiday break. Last term we had a strong focus on the routines which support learning, particularly on entry routines and attention in class. These will continue throughout the year as evidence shows very clearly that when these elements are well-established, learning is enhanced. Ask your child about the expectations for entry and attention.
Every Moment Counts
Attendance is one of our school priorities as we know that students learn best at school with their peers. Our targets are on both full day attendance and on-time arrival as the beginning of the day helps to set students up well for successful learning during the crucial morning learning session. The following graphic helps to remind us that arriving late regularly, even just a few minutes late makes a big impact over time.
Mothers Day Celebrations
Many thanks to our School Association, and particularly the fundraising group, who have worked very hard to organise this week’s Mothers’ Day celebrations. We have a BBQ breakfast starting at 7:45am as well as the Mothers’ Day stall where every child has the opportunity to buy gift/s for the special women in their life. Thank you also to families who have donated gifts for the stall and to sponsors for the BBQ - Pure Foods and Brown Family. Thanks also to our volunteer helpers. We hope to see you there!
Playground Projects
Work on the slide project continues and we will be excited to share an expected finish date very soon. Contractors are currently working on the mural and climbing wall, which should be finished next week. We look forward to seeing lots of smiles and happy children when they play in this new space.
Mural
We are excited to share a colourful and creative addition to our playground with the mural now complete. Many thanks to artist, Brandi Salmon, who worked hard during the holiday break to complete the mural. The mural includes native Tasmanian landscape and fauna. Please call by the northern end of the hall to admire this playground addition.
Exciting Events in Term 2
Term 2 includes many exciting events including Mothers Day events this week, Walk Safely to School, Cross Country, Swimming and Water Safety, 5 / 6 Sport, Parent / Teacher Meetings.
Welcomes and Farewells
Welcome to Shabzaid – 1 / 2 C and Zara – Kin B who start this week. Welcome back to Effie – returning to 1 / 2 C.

Mother's Day Stall
This year our Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 9 May for Prep – 6.
We are currently seeking donations for the stall. In particular chocolates, lollies and cans of soft drink.
All donations can be left at the office in the tub provided or alternatively be given to your child to deliver to their class teacher.
If anyone can help with making some yummy baked goodies or sweets for our stall that would be greatly appreciated. These must be individually wrapped, have ingredients listed and can be brought to the library on the morning of the stall.
Plants are always popular, please let the office know if you are able to help with donating these closer to the stall date.
More stall information will be provided at a later date but if you have any further queries or can help out in any way please let us know.
Please help us support our school by donating so that students can buy that special loved one a gift for Mother’s Day.

Fluency Focus in 1/2C
This term in Grade 1/2C, we've been introduced to our new focus for the term; reading fluency. Using all the phonological skills we've learned through our UFLI lessons, students are learning to read with greater confidence and accuracy. Our key focus for fluency this term is accuracy—making sure we read each word correctly and use our decoding strategies when we come across tricky words.
To help us practise, we've been doing partnered reading, where one student takes on the role of the coach, following along and supporting while the other reads aloud. Once finished, they switch roles. This has been a fun and effective way to build fluency and support one another in our reading journey!

Michelle O’Byrne Engages Glen Dhu Students in Politics Discussion
Students at Glen Dhu Primary School had the exciting opportunity to hear from the Honourable Michelle O’Byrne, Speaker of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. She led an engaging discussion with Year 5-6 students, making politics accessible and interactive.
Ms. O’Byrne encouraged questions, explained government processes in a student-friendly way, and highlighted the importance of young voices in shaping the future. She shared real-life examples of how government decisions impact daily life, inspiring students to think critically about leadership and civic engagement.
Her visit left students eager to learn more and empowered to take an interest in shaping their communities.
National Walk Safely to School Day
Children in primary schools across Australia will take significant steps toward a healthier future by joining National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday, May 16, 2025.
The initiative highlights the benefits of regular walking and active transport, including health, road safety, transport efficiency, and environmental sustainability, encouraging children to walk not just on May 16, but every day.
On Friday, May 16, there will be three designated meeting points for students to walk to school alongside teachers from Glen Dhu Primary School: Launceston Eye Institute, Kim Roe School of Dance, and Coronation Park. Teachers will meet students at these meeting points at 8:30am and walk to school with them.
Regular walking enhances children's physical health, cognitive development, and academic performance. Additionally, the event promotes environmental stewardship, reduces traffic congestion around schools, and motivates parents and caregivers to increase their walking habits.
We encourage parents to drop their children off at one of the meeting points shown below:

We are always looking for volunteers for our Breakfast Club every morning from 8:30-9.00 am. If you would like to help just let the school office know. Helpers can volunteer for a day, a week or day a fortnight. We would love to hear from you.
We will be communicating with parents via email throughout the year and want to keep our email contact list as accurate as possible. Please notify the office if your email changes, in person by phone: 6344 1349 or email: glen.dhu.primary@decyp.tas.gov.au
We are an allergy aware school and need your support as we have a number of students with severe allergies to nuts as well as some other common allergens. Students are asked not to bring any food items that contain nuts or traces of nuts. If you are not sure, please keep this as a home food rather than a school lunch box item. For example, peanut butter, nutella and many muesli bars contain nuts and CANNOT be brought to school! Thank you for your support in helping to keep everyone safe.
Safe Guarding Children & Young People
Volunteering at Glen Dhu Primary School in 2025
We love having families involved in their children’s education at Glen Dhu Primary School.
Did you know if you want to volunteer at school as parent help, on an excursion or in Breakfast or Reading Club you need to complete Mandatory Safeguarding Training? This is to help keep all our children safe and so that you know what to do if you see or hear something that concerns you.
The training is easy! Watch the 15 minute video at the link below, save a copy of your certificate to show at the school office and you are ready to go!
Compulsory Safeguarding Training for Workers - Department for Education, Children and Young People
Training must be completed every 12 months.
Thank you for helping to keep out children safe!
No Smoking Allowed on DECYP Sites

Supporting Your Child's Online Learning at Home
Online learning has become an essential part of education, and families play a crucial role in supporting their child’s digital learning experience. By developing digital skills, creating a safe learning environment, and spending time online together, parents can help their children thrive academically and safely navigate the digital world.
Develop Your Digital Skills
Understanding the technology your child uses can help you guide and support them effectively. Take the time to explore educational platforms, learn about internet safety, and stay updated on the latest digital tools. There are many free online courses and resources available to help parents develop their digital literacy skills.
Creating a Safe and Engaging Online Environment
Ensuring a secure and structured digital space for learning is key. Here are some tips:
- Set up parental controls on devices and applications to filter age-appropriate content.
- Encourage open discussions about online safety, including responsible social media use and recognizing potential online risks.
- Establish screen time guidelines to balance online learning with offline activities.
Opportunities to Play, Explore, and Learn
Children learn best when they have the chance to explore concepts in a fun and interactive way. You can support their learning by:
- Engaging in educational games that reinforce what they learn in school.
- Watching educational videos together to enhance understanding of various subjects.
- Encouraging creativity through digital storytelling, coding activities, and online art projects.
Over the coming weeks there will be further information placed in our school newsletter with tools and tricks to support your child’s online learning at home. More information can be found at: Digital skills for families - Department for Education, Children and Young People
