Dear Families, Friends and Students,
I am very pleased to announce a big step forward in progress towards the next playground project with the contract for this work released this week. Installation of the swings will begin during the next holiday break, together with the installation of a new fence along the Westbury Road boundary. This will help us to provide a safe and enjoyable play area with swings, water play, sandpit and balance beams all included in the new design. Plans for the area are displayed on the parent noticeboard near the office. Please have a look next time you’re at school.
Supervision Before and After School
Children should not arrive at school before 8:30am. This is the time when classrooms are open and supervision begins on the top court. There is no playground supervision after school and this means all students should leave the school grounds as soon as possible unless supervised by their parent/s. Children waiting for pick-up should wait on the front deck so that they are ready as soon as their parent arrives. Only children supervised by their parent/s are able to play on equipment, including the slide.
Salvation Army Winter Appeal
Yesterday we held Pyjama Day as a way to draw awareness to the struggles some families face during the colder months of winter. We donated $444.25 to the Winter Appeal, as well as a huge pile of warm clothing and blankets donated by families in our school community. The fundraiser helps our children to support others and to feel gratitude for the simple things in their lives which mean we are warm and comfortable during the cold Tassie winter. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause.
Respectful Visitor and Volunteer Policy
A copy of the revised Respectful Visitor and Volunteer Policy has been linked on our Facebook Page and school website. The revised policy has very minor changes which outline requirements on all DECYP sites to sign in when visiting. There is no need to sign-in at drop-off and pick-up for the brief time parents visit classrooms before 9am and at 2:55pm, nor for attendance at assembly or sporting events. Safeguarding requirements mean parents must report to the main office to sign in when you visit for any other purpose at other times during the day.
Crossing the Line is DECYP’s campaign to remind all members of the community about respectful communication in schools. These graphics from the policy reminds us all about our rights and responsibilities in helping to ensure a respectful culture at Glen Dhu.
LSSSA Cross Country
Congratulations to students named in the Glen Dhu team to participate in the LSSSA Cross Country Carnival tomorrow. Best wishes to our teams as they head to Windsor Precinct in Riverside to compete in a school teams competition. Schools gain points for the first four runners to finish in each grade group. Best wishes to everyone!
Reports and Parent/Teacher Meetings
Teachers are currently working hard on writing reports for all students P – 6. KDC reports for students in Kindergarten are also in progress. These will be sent home with students on Friday 20 June. Reports give an indication of your child’s achievement against the standards outlined in the Australian Curriculum for English, Maths and Science. The standards become more complex each year meaning student ratings may change from year to year. Australian Curriculum ratings are also included for HPE and Music. Evidence of Learning will be shared at Parent/Teacher Meetings which will be held during Week 9. Dates for Parent/Teacher meetings are Monday 23 June – Friday 27 June. Further details about times and booking details will be sent home with students next week.
Swimming and Water Safety Program
Every year students in grades three, four and five participate in the annual SWSP. This is a statewide program to help students learn to swim and to be safe in and around the water. This is a requirement for every student in Tasmania. There is no cost for children, with lessons every day in Weeks 7 and 8. Lessons are held at Launceston Aquatic Centre, with students travelling by bus to and from the pool.
Welcomes and Farewells
This week we welcome Ean who joins Kinder B. Welcome to Ean and his family to our community. We farewelled Dylan and Bridie.
Regards
Lee Craw

Supporting Your Child's Online Learning at Home
Online learning has become an essential part of education, and families play a crucial role in supporting their child’s digital learning experience. By developing digital skills, creating a safe learning environment, and spending time online together, parents can help their children thrive academically and safely navigate the digital world.
Develop Your Digital Skills
Understanding the technology your child uses can help you guide and support them effectively. Take the time to explore educational platforms, learn about internet safety, and stay updated on the latest digital tools. There are many free online courses and resources available to help parents develop their digital literacy skills.
Creating a Safe and Engaging Online Environment
Ensuring a secure and structured digital space for learning is key. Here are some tips:
- Set up parental controls on devices and applications to filter age-appropriate content.
- Encourage open discussions about online safety, including responsible social media use and recognizing potential online risks.
- Establish screen time guidelines to balance online learning with offline activities.
Opportunities to Play, Explore, and Learn
Children learn best when they have the chance to explore concepts in a fun and interactive way. You can support their learning by:
- Engaging in educational games that reinforce what they learn in school.
- Watching educational videos together to enhance understanding of various subjects.
- Encouraging creativity through digital storytelling, coding activities, and online art projects.
Over the coming weeks there will be further information placed in our school newsletter with tools and tricks to support your child’s online learning at home. More information can be found at: Digital skills for families - Department for Education, Children and Young People
Subway Lunches are on Wednesdays.
Lunches can be ordered multiple weeks in advance. Don't forget to update your child's profile to their 2025 class (they are listed as Kinder A etc. rather than their teacher's name this year). Please email contact@subsforyou.com for more information.
We are an allergy aware school and need your support as we have a number of students with severe allergies to nuts as well as some other common allergens. Students are asked not to bring any food items that contain nuts or traces of nuts. If you are not sure, please keep this as a home food rather than a school lunch box item. For example, peanut butter, nutella and many muesli bars contain nuts and CANNOT be brought to school! Thank you for your support in helping to keep everyone safe.
Did you know that Glen Dhu Primary School is a Partner School with the Smith Family? This means the Smith Family support us in lots of ways including providing programs for students such as Job Jump and Student2Student Reading.
The Smith Family also support over 50 students from Prep to Grade 6 at Glen Dhu through the Learning for Life program.

The eSafety Commissioner plays a vital role in keeping Australians safe online. In an increasingly digital world, the eSafety Commissioner helps protect individuals—especially children—from cyberbullying, online abuse, and harmful content. By promoting digital literacy, enforcing online safety laws, and working with platforms to remove harmful material, the Commissioner ensures that the internet remains a safer and more respectful space for everyone. There are a number of resources on the eSafety Commissioner website. For more information, click the link below:
